Density meters made of glass work according to the "Archimedes principle": The buoyant force of a body in a liquid or gas is equal to the weight of the displaced liquid or gas. The gram is the mass of one cubic centimeter (or 1 cc or 1 ml) of pure water. So now there are a number of units used for measuring sugar that relate directly to a unit of weight. Other units, in turn, refer to density or specific gravity or bulk density. Bulk density is the weight per unit volume (g/cm3). The bulk density of pure water is 1 g/cm3. The bulk density of water is 1 (i.e., 1,000).
