How brewing kettles are used

In addition to boiling, the wort is also hopped in the brewing kettle. The addition of hops is crucial for the astringency of your beer. The rule of thumb is: the more hops are added, the more bitter substances are released and the wort becomes bitter. In addition, the variety of hops selected plays a role. But the timing and method of addition also determine the taste of your beer. In addition, the bittering agents from the hops increase the shelf life of the beer, as they prevent the development of microorganisms. Brewing kettles differ mainly in the way they are heated. Traditionally, heating is direct. Especially in old breweries, there are still boilers with gas or oil firing. Nowadays, heating by means of steam is used more frequently. In this case, heating takes place via pipes that run along the bottom of the boiler and are heated by means of superheated steam. Induction is also used for heating, and electric heating rods are also used for heating smaller brewing kettles. Because of the high robustness and compatibility with various heating methods, brewing kettles are often made of stainless steel.
