Plastic fermentation bucket and fermentation barrel for the production of wine

A fermentation bucket or a fermentation barrel made of plastic is for the Beginner particularly well suited. The material is inexpensive and stable. The models are easy to clean due to the large opening. The process of cleaning is particularly important, because residues lead to the fact that the next Wine batch spoils. The wine fermenters have a lid made of plastic, which is equipped with or without a hole. In the hole is placed a rubber stopper that supports the fermentation tube. The disadvantage of these models is that the lids are not completely tight. As long as the mash is in the fermentation phase, this aspect is less important, because during this phase the carbon dioxide must be able to escape from the fermenter

An additional Sealing ring can be inserted into the lid of the fermentation buckets to ensure a tight seal. Fermentation buckets should not be used for storage, as the plastic can lead to Permeation tends to permeate. Over time, the acid in the wine can eat through the plastic pores, significantly affecting the taste of the wine. There is also a risk that the Fermentation bucket absorbs the aromas of the wine during storage. For subsequent storage, it is therefore advisable to use a Stainless steel storage barrel. To make it easier to bottle the finished wine from the fermentation bucket after fermentation, the fermentation containers have a drain valve. Carrying handles on the fermentation barrel or metal brackets on the fermentation bucket make it easier to transport the fermentation containers.

Glass wine carboy

A wine carboy made of glass is ideal for fermenting, because the material is characterized by neutral taste and completely gas-tight properties properties. It does not release aromas to the wine, because no acid can pass through the glass. The fermentation processes can also be observed through the glass. The disadvantage of a fermentation carboy lies in the cleaning, which is made difficult by the thin neck of the wine carboy. In order to remove the residues completely from the wine carboy, professional accessories are necessary. Special bottle brushes with a curved neck are used for cleaning. A wine balloon with a curved bottom facilitates the removal of the sediment during cleaning

The wine balloon is available in different sizes. A selection of different sizes is recommended for wine production. A combination of the 25 liter, 15 liter and 10 liter sizes has proven successful. The 25 liter wine balloon serves as a start for a strongly foaming batch. The generous rising space prevents the foam from rising and entering the fermentation tube. After the foaming has subsided and contact between the wine and oxygen is to be avoided, the batch is transferred to the smaller balloons. A glass wine balloon in a plastic basket allows easy transportation. In addition, the basket protects the wine balloon from breakage. The glass wine balloon is suitable for the production of various wines such as:

● Fruit wine made from strawberries, apples or peaches

● Mead made from honey and apples

● New wine made from red grapes

● White wine from light grapes

Accessories for professional fermentation

Fermentation is a process that takes place in the absence of oxygen. Therefore, during fermentation, it must be guaranteed that no oxygen enters the fermentation tank. During fermentation CO2 is produced, which leads to an increase in pressure in the wine balloon. This excess pressure must escape from the fermentation balloon so that the material does not burst. As long as fermentation is very strong in the early stages, a completely airtight vessel is unnecessary. If the gas escapes from leaking lid openings, oxygen cannot enter the fermentation vessel. If fermentation becomes weaker, it is recommended to use an airtight vessel with a high-quality fermentation cap. It serves to relieve pressure and at the same time exclude oxygen.

Fermentation tube is the ideal accessory. It consists of a curved tube containing water as a barrier liquid. The gas can escape through the barrier liquid at the widenings in the fermentation tube. The water  should only be filled so high that the excess pressure cannot push the water out of the fermentation tube. Many Wine Starter Sets contain beside the Wine Balloon a rubber stopper and a fermentation tube that fit on the opening. The single accessories allow an individual composition of utensils, which can be selected depending on their quality and purpose. Fermentation tubes are made of glass or plastic. Accessories made of plastic are characterized by a lower price and higher Breaking strength resistance. In addition to these accessories, a mash spoon is part of the basic equipment. It is used to stir and loosen the mixture, which positively supports fermentation
